Massefficient is a neologism used to describe a system or product that delivers its required performance with minimal mass. It emphasizes the efficiency of mass in achieving function, focusing on the ratio of useful output to total mass rather than simply reducing weight for its own sake.

In practice, massefficient design seeks to maximize mass-specific performance. A common way to express this is through a mass efficiency metric, such as performance divided by mass (P/M). Engineers may also consider related weight-specific measures like power-to-weight, stiffness-to-weight, or strength-to-weight. The concept does not refer to a single standard metric, but rather to a design philosophy that weighs performance outcomes against added mass and the costs or consequences of carrying that mass.

Design strategies associated with massefficient work include selecting materials with high strength-to-weight ratios, employing topology optimization to remove unnecessary material, integrating multiple functions into a single component, and using manufacturing methods that reduce mass without compromising integrity. Trade-offs are central: decreasing mass can affect durability, safety margins, or manufacturability, so massefficient design aims for balanced improvements that do not degrade overall system reliability.

Applications are common across engineering fields. In aerospace, reducing airframe mass can improve fuel efficiency; in automotive design, lighter platforms can extend range and performance; in consumer electronics, compact, lightweight devices aim for longer battery life and better ergonomics; in sports equipment and architectural design, mass-efficient solutions can yield performance gains without excessive material use.
