Maritimenavigational, commonly written as maritime navigational, is the discipline concerned with planning, executing, and monitoring the movement of ships at sea to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant operation. It blends seamanship with tools and procedures for determining a vessel's position, course, and speed, and for maintaining awareness of hazards and traffic.

Historically, navigation relied on celestial navigation, dead reckoning, and later chronometers and radio beacons. Modern practice centers on electronic aids such as satellite navigation (GNSS), electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS), radar, automatic identification systems (AIS), and VDRs. Position fixes are confirmed by cross-checking multiple sources, and route planning accounts for weather, currents, tides, and regulatory constraints.

Regulatory framework includes the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs) and the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) convention, administered by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and flag states. Mariners receive formal training in navigation, watchkeeping, and bridge resource management to ensure safe decision making and teamwork.

Applications vary from commercial shipping and passenger vessels to naval and offshore operations. The field continues to evolve with advances in autonomy, digital charts, cyber security, and resilient navigational systems designed to reduce human error and improve situational awareness.
