Marginata is a Latin epithet meaning "bordered" or "margined" and is used in the scientific names of various organisms. The best-known use in horticulture is Dracaena marginata, the Madagascar dragon tree, a popular ornamental plant.

Taxonomy and nomenclature: Dracaena marginata (L.) Cav. is placed in the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Nolinoideae. In older classifications the species was sometimes listed as Cordyline marginata. The species is native to Madagascar and is widely cultivated worldwide as a decorative plant.

Description: It is a slender evergreen tree or shrub with a single trunk and tufts of long, narrow, arching leaves. Leaves are typically dark green with reddish or purple margins in many cultivars. Outdoors it can reach several meters in height; indoors it is usually smaller but can grow taller under good light.

Cultivation and uses: Dracaena marginata is commonly grown as a houseplant or interior accent in offices. It prefers bright, indirect light and well-draining soil. Water sparingly, allowing the top of the soil to dry between waterings. It tolerates a range of indoor conditions but dislikes overwatering and cold drafts. It is widely used for interior greenery in homes and commercial spaces.

Cultivars and care notes: Popular cultivars include 'Tricolor' (variegated with lighter margins) and 'Colorama' (often with red-tinged margins). It is relatively pest-resistant but can be affected by mealybugs, scale, or spider mites. It is mildly toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, so pet owners should exercise caution.
