Manualkäigukastidel, commonly known as manual transmissions or stick shifts, are a type of gearbox used in vehicles to control the speed and torque delivered to the drive wheels. Unlike automatic transmissions, manual transmissions require the driver to actively engage and disengage the clutch and select gears using a gear lever.

The core components of a manual transmission include the clutch, input shaft, output shaft, countershaft (or layshaft), and various gears. The clutch acts as a coupling device, temporarily disconnecting the engine from the transmission to allow for gear changes. The gear lever, operated by the driver, moves shift forks within the transmission housing, engaging specific gear sets to achieve the desired gear ratio.

Gear ratios determine how much torque is multiplied and how quickly the output shaft rotates relative to the engine's crankshaft. Lower gears provide higher torque for acceleration and climbing hills, while higher gears offer lower torque but allow for more efficient, higher-speed cruising.

The operation of a manual transmission involves a sequence of actions: depressing the clutch pedal to disengage the engine, moving the gear lever to the desired gear, and then releasing the clutch pedal to re-engage the engine with the transmission. This process allows for precise control over the vehicle's power delivery, often favored by driving enthusiasts for the direct connection and engagement it provides.

Manual transmissions are generally simpler in design, lighter, and more fuel-efficient than their automatic counterparts, although modern automatic transmissions have significantly closed this gap. They also tend to be more robust and less expensive to repair.
