countershaft
A countershaft, also known as a layshaft in some contexts, is an auxiliary shaft in a gear train that carries a set of gears which mesh with corresponding gears on the input and output shafts to provide multiple transmission ratios. In many manual transmissions and gearboxes, the countershaft runs parallel to the main shaft and is driven by gears from the input side. The gears fixed to the countershaft mesh with gears on both the input and output shafts, forming a series of gear trains that produce different speeds and torques at the output.
Construction and operation typically involve the countershaft being supported by bearings at its ends and rotated
Reverse gear is commonly obtained by including an idler gear arrangement that changes the direction of rotation
In use, countershifts are found in many traditional automotive manual transmissions, motorcycles, and various machine tools
