Manometrella

Manometrella is a genus of small, burrowing mammals belonging to the family Talpidae, commonly known as moles. These animals are native to eastern Europe, with their range primarily encompassing parts of Russia and Ukraine. Manometrella are characterized by their sleek, velvety fur, which is typically dark brown or black, and their reduced, almost vestigial eyes, an adaptation to their subterranean lifestyle. Like other moles, they possess powerful forelimbs with large, spade-like claws, perfectly suited for digging extensive tunnel systems.

The diet of Manometrella consists mainly of earthworms, insects, and other invertebrates found in the soil. They are solitary creatures, interacting with others only during the breeding season. Their burrows are complex networks of tunnels that serve as both shelter and hunting grounds. The presence of molehills, mounds of excavated soil, are the most visible sign of their activity on the surface.

Reproduction in Manometrella typically involves a litter of a few pups, born blind and helpless in a specially constructed chamber within their burrow. The young are cared for by the mother until they are old enough to fend for themselves. Due to their elusive nature and subterranean habits, Manometrella are not well-studied, and much of their behavior and ecology remains a subject of ongoing research.
