Manipulaatio

Manipulaatio is a term used to describe the act of affecting or controlling something or someone through influence or handling. In Finnish usage it covers social and psychological processes as well as the physical handling of objects, such as in robotics or data processing. The word derives from Latin manipulus and related roots through historical use in several European languages.

In social contexts, manipulation refers to attempts to influence another person’s beliefs, emotions, or actions, often without explicit consent and sometimes through deception, flattery, or coercion. Broader applications include political messaging, media practices, and advertising, where information can be framed or omitted to guide opinions or behavior. Data manipulation involves altering datasets or results to mislead.

Technical manipulation covers controlling machines, devices, or software, such as robotics or automation, and can be neutral or malicious depending on intent and safeguards. Techniques range from misdirection and selective reporting to deception, gaslighting, or social engineering in cyberspace (phishing, fake accounts, or deepfakes).

Ethics and regulation emphasize autonomy, consent, and transparency. In professional contexts, manipulation is considered unacceptable if it bypasses informed consent or harms others. Safeguards include critical evaluation of sources, verification of data, and robust platform policies. Legal frameworks address fraud, false advertising, privacy violations, and related harms.
