Mallitus

Mallitus refers to a phenomenon observed in certain populations of the common European mole (Talpa europaea) where individuals exhibit a distinctive coat pattern. Unlike the typical uniform dark gray or black fur of the species, mallitus moles possess patches of lighter colored fur, often appearing as white or silvery markings on their underside, chest, or face. This variation is not a separate species but rather an unusual genetic expression within the existing species.

The exact cause of mallitus is believed to be a genetic mutation affecting pigment production. While the precise gene or mechanism is not fully understood, it is thought to be a recessive trait, meaning an individual must inherit two copies of the mutated gene from its parents to display the mallitus pattern. This implies that even moles without the visible patches may carry the gene and pass it on.

Mallitus is considered a rare occurrence, and sightings are infrequent. It does not appear to confer any significant advantage or disadvantage to the mole in terms of survival or reproduction. Individuals with mallitus are subject to the same ecological pressures and behaviors as their uniformly colored counterparts, including burrowing, foraging for invertebrates, and avoiding predators. The phenomenon is primarily of interest to naturalists and geneticists studying variations within wild populations.
