Malinois

The Belgian Malinois, commonly referred to as Malinois, is a medium-to-large herding dog and one of the four varieties of the Belgian Shepherd. It is known for its athletic build, high drive, and versatility. The coat is short and dense, typically fawn to mahogany with a black mask. Males stand about 22 to 26 inches at the withers and weigh roughly 55 to 80 pounds; females are slightly smaller. The breed’s temperament is confident, alert, and obedient, with a strong work ethic. Malinois are highly intelligent and trainable but require consistent, experienced handling and ample physical and mental activity. They are wary of strangers but make loyal and protective family dogs when properly socialized.

Originating in Belgium, the Malinois was developed from native herding stock in the Mechelen region (hence the name Malinois) for practical farm and defense work. The variety was standardized in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is one of the four Belgian Shepherd types recognized by many kennel clubs, including the FCI. In contemporary use, Malinois are prominent in police and military service worldwide, as well as search and rescue, detection work, and competitive canine sports. They require substantial daily exercise and ongoing training to prevent behavior problems.

Health and care: Belgian Malinois typically live 12–14 years. They have a short coat that requires minimal grooming beyond regular brushing. They are generally healthy but can be predisposed to hip and elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, and cataracts. Regular veterinary care, a balanced diet, and ample physical activity are essential.
