Maksimalstyrke

Maksimalstyrke is the greatest force a muscle or muscle group can generate during a single maximal voluntary contraction, most often assessed in resistance training as the one-repetition maximum (1RM) for a given exercise such as the squat, bench press, or deadlift.

Measurement and testing: 1RM tests are standard, but submaximal estimates can be used when safety or access is limited. Formulas such as Epley or Brzycki convert reps to an estimated 1RM. Tests should be standardized with proper warm-up and supervision to ensure accuracy and safety.

Determinants: Maksimalstyrke depends on neural factors, muscle cross-sectional area, fiber type and recruitment, muscle architecture, tendon stiffness, leverage, and technique. Training status, age, sex, and fatigue also influence the maximum force that can be produced.

Development: Maksimalstyrke is typically developed with high-load resistance training near 85–100% of 1RM, performed for low repetitions with adequate rest. Progressive overload, periodization, and variation in exercises are used to improve neural efficiency and muscle strength while maintaining safety.

Safety and use: Testing or heavy lifting should be done with proper technique, warm-up, and supervision to reduce injury risk. Novices should build a base with submaximal loads before attempting true 1RM attempts, and training should be individualized and monitored.

Context: In other fields such as materials science or structural engineering, the term can refer to the maximum stress a material can withstand before failure, often called ultimate tensile strength.
