MDFlevyjen, commonly known as MDF or Medium-Density Fibreboard, is a type of engineered wood product. It is manufactured by breaking down hardwood or softwood into wood fibres, typically in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and then applying high temperature and pressure. This process results in dense, flat panels.

MDF is characterized by its uniform structure, lacking the grain or knots found in solid wood. This makes it easy to cut, shape, and machine without splintering, and it holds screws and fasteners well. Its smooth surface is ideal for painting, veneering, or laminating, providing a consistent finish.

The applications of MDF are extensive. It is widely used in furniture manufacturing, particularly for cabinet doors, drawer fronts, and shelving. It is also a popular choice for interior mouldings, picture frames, and as a substrate for laminate flooring. In construction, MDF can be found in decorative wall panels and as a component in soundproofing systems due to its density.

MDF is available in various grades and densities to suit different applications. Standard MDF is suitable for most general purposes. Moisture-resistant MDF is treated to withstand damp environments, making it appropriate for kitchens and bathrooms, while fire-retardant MDF is used in public buildings where fire safety regulations are strict. Care should be taken to avoid excessive moisture, as standard MDF can swell and degrade if exposed to water.
