In practice, presence detection sensors are integrated into lighting controls to dim or turn off fixtures when occupants leave a room, thereby saving energy. HVAC systems adjust temperature setpoints based on room occupancy, and security systems trigger alarms or camera recordings upon detecting unexpected presence. They are essential for compliant building standards like LEED and WELL, helping to meet energy efficiency and occupant comfort objectives.

Deployment considerations include sensor placement, field of view, and environmental factors such as airflow, temperature gradients, and electromagnetic interference. Calibration and tuning are often required to balance sensitivity with false‑trigger tolerance. As smart‑building technologies evolve, presence detection sensors are increasingly paired with occupancy sensors, motion detectors, and AI algorithms for predictive analytics and enhanced automation.
