Lähtöryhmät, or "departure groups," is a Finnish term commonly used in the context of competitive orienteering and other outdoor sports. The concept refers to a system where participants are divided into groups based on their estimated skill level or performance ability. This method is employed to ensure fair competition and to balance the difficulty of races for participants of varying experience.

In orienteering, Lähtöryhmät are typically assigned based on a participant's previous performance in similar events, their self-assessed skill level, or recommendations from coaches or organizers. The groups are usually labeled with letters or numbers, such as A, B, C, or 1, 2, 3, with the highest group (e.g., A or 1) representing the fastest or most skilled competitors. This categorization helps prevent top performers from dominating races, making the competition more enjoyable and challenging for all participants.

The assignment process often involves a mix of objective and subjective criteria. Organizers may use historical race data to estimate a participant’s potential, while also allowing for some flexibility to accommodate new or less experienced competitors. In some cases, participants can request a change in their group if they feel their current placement is inaccurate, though this is typically reviewed by organizers.

Lähtöryhmät are not limited to orienteering but can also appear in other sports, such as cross-country skiing or trail running, where similar principles of fair competition and balanced difficulty are applied. The system encourages participants to compete against others of similar ability, fostering a more inclusive and engaging experience for all levels of athletes.
