Loicas

Loicas is a genus of three species of passerine birds in the family Thraupidae. These birds are native to South America, found in countries such as Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay. The genus name "Loicas" comes from the Mapuche word for these birds.

The three species within the genus are the Red-breasted Meadowlark (Leistes militaris), the Long-tailed Meadowlark (Leistes superciliaris), and the White-browed Meadowlark (Leistes loyca). Previously, these species were often grouped together, but genetic studies have led to their classification into separate genera by some authorities, with "Leistes" being a common alternative. However, the name "Loicas" is still widely recognized and used for this group.

These birds are characterized by their striking plumage, with males typically displaying vibrant colors, often including red, black, and white. Females are generally more subdued in coloration. They inhabit open grasslands, meadows, and savannas, where they forage for insects, seeds, and grains. Their diet can vary depending on the season and availability of food.

Loicas are known for their distinctive songs, which are often heard during the breeding season. They are generally ground-dwelling birds, though they will perch on low shrubs or fences. Their nests are typically built on the ground, concealed within dense vegetation. The conservation status of the different species varies, but they are not currently considered to be at high risk of extinction, although habitat loss can be a concern in some areas.
