Liputus

Liputus is a Finnish concept related to escape, evasion, and the avoidance of responsibilities. It is often translated as "getting away" or "having an exit," but the notion is more encompassing and complex.

Coming from the Finnish verb "loppua," which roughly translates as "cease" or "come to an end," the term Liputus describes an attempt to disconnect from an obligation, duty, or stimulating force. This may manifest in various contexts, such as avoiding work, escaping problematic social situations, or seeking a singular objective in life.

The idea of Liputus is best understood within the context of a private, individual "habit space" described by Finnish sociologist Heikki Pesonen in his work on work environment and personal comfort. Pesonen divides the individual's existence into public, universal spaces (such as workplaces or educational institutions) and private, individual "habit spaces." In these habit spaces, an individual cultivates their inner self, practices relaxation, and alleviates the external factors disrupting personal well-being.

Although translated as "escape" or "having a way out," Liputus also discusses avoiding reflecting over life concerns. This self-disconnection can offer subjective relief but also potentially misunderstood as negative, manifesting as a sort of susceptibility when being subject to one's own desire or that stated by societal expectations.
