Lightingfloor is a flooring system that incorporates luminous elements into floor surfaces to generate light, support wayfinding, or create ambient illumination. It encompasses a range of products, from modular LED tiles to flexible illuminated layers beneath a translucent top surface. The goal is to provide controlled light with durability suitable for foot traffic and integration with building automation.

Common technologies include LED tile arrays embedded in a rigid or flexible substrate, edge-lit acrylic or polycarbonate panels, and fiber optic light guides embedded in resin or concrete. Some installations use electro-luminescent panels, though LEDs are the dominant technology due to efficiency, control, and durability. Color and brightness are typically programmable via local controls or building automation.

Design and installation considerations include electrical supply requirements, thermal management, slip resistance, and weatherproofing for outdoor or wet environments. Many systems use low-voltage power or line-powered LED drivers with dimming, DMX or DALI control, and wireless interfaces for integration with sensors or building management systems. Compliance with electrical and safety codes is essential.

Control and aesthetics: Lightingfloor can be static or dynamic, with color-changing sequences, gradients, or interaction with people or objects. Some systems use embedded sensors to respond to motion or sound, while others are pre-programmed for fixed patterns. Durability and maintenance are important, with modules designed for replaceability and easy cleaning.

Applications include architectural interiors for ambiance and navigation, museums and galleries for exhibits, retail floor marking, airports and hospitals for wayfinding, and stage or film production as a tactile lighting element.

Limitations include higher upfront cost, complexity of installation, and the need for ongoing maintenance for LED modules. Advances in flexible LEDs, improved IP ratings, and wireless controls are expanding use cases.
