LibreCAD

LibreCAD is a free, open-source 2D computer-aided design (CAD) application designed for technical drawing and drafting. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux and emphasizes a lightweight, straightforward interface for 2D work. The project is a fork of QCAD Community Edition 2.x, created in 2013 by volunteers to preserve a free, community-driven 2D CAD tool. LibreCAD is released under the GNU General Public License version 2 (GPLv2). It is maintained by a community of developers and users who contribute through code, translations, and documentation.

LibreCAD focuses on 2D drafting rather than 3D modeling. It offers standard tools for drawing and editing, including lines, polylines, circles, arcs, and ellipses, with features for snapping, layers, blocks, and dimensioning. Editing operations such as trim, extend, offset, and fillet are supported, along with typical drafting aids like grids and rulers. The interface is designed to be accessible to beginners while providing enough functionality for simple engineering drawings, schematic layouts, floor plans, and mechanical sketches.

For interoperability, LibreCAD uses the DXF format as its primary import/export format, enabling exchange with other CAD programs. The software is distributed as a standalone application and is part of a broader ecosystem of open-source CAD tools used in education and small projects.
