The purpose of lausnadæmandi is to resolve disputes over rights, obligations, or damages between individuals, businesses, or other entities.

The process begins when a plaintiff files a complaint (*málsvarið*) with the appropriate court, detailing the claims and legal grounds. The defendant is then formally notified and given a chance to respond. Both parties may present evidence, call witnesses, and submit legal arguments. Lausnadæmandi can involve various types of disputes, including contract breaches, property disputes, personal injury claims, or commercial conflicts.
