Lapsverband

Lapsverband, often written as Lappenverband in German, is a basic wound dressing technique used in first aid and clinical care. The term translates roughly to a patch- or pad-bandage: a piece of cloth or sterile gauze (the Lappen) is placed over the wound and secured with a bandage to hold the pad in place, absorb fluids, and protect the wound from contamination.

The lapsverband is typically employed to cover wounds and to manage exudate and minor to moderate bleeding. It is used when a protective dressing is required and avoids direct contact between the wound and external surfaces. For active arterial bleeding, direct pressure and more compressive methods are prioritized; the lapsverband may be used in conjunction with pressure to secure a dressing.

Application generally follows these steps: choose a clean pad or piece of fabric, place it over the wound, cover with a clean outer layer if needed, wrap a bandage around the area to secure the pad without constricting circulation, and verify that the wearer can still feel and move the fingers or toes beyond the bandage. The dressing should stay in place without being so tight that it cut off circulation. If the pad becomes soaked, replace it with a clean one.

In practice, the lapsverband is taught in many basic first aid and medical training programs as a simple, versatile method for wound protection. It is often distinguished from more pressure-oriented dressings (Druckverband), which aim to control bleeding primarily through compression. Regional terminology varies, with Lappenverband being common in German-speaking contexts and related terms appearing in other languages as well.
