Druckverband

Druckverband is a compression bandage used in first aid and medicine to control bleeding, limit blood loss, and reduce swelling. It combines a sterile pad or compress placed directly on the wound with an elastic or cohesive bandage that holds the pad in place and applies even pressure. Properly applied, it helps achieve hemostasis and stabilizes the injured area until further care is available.

Indications for use include external bleeding from wounds such as cuts or lacerations, and injuries with swelling such as sprains or contusions. It may also be used after minor procedures in some settings. A Druckverband is not a substitute for professional care in cases of life-threatening bleeding or severe trauma and should be applied as part of initial first-aid measures.

How to apply a Druckverband: first ensure the scene is safe and the patient is protected. If possible, clean the wound and cover it with a sterile pad. Place the pad directly over the wound, then wrap the bandage around the limb or affected area with the pressure evenly distributed. Start distal and work proximally, applying firm, steady pressure without making the wrap too tight. Secure the end with tape or ties. Check distal circulation and sensation (color, warmth, capillary refill, tingling). If numbness, pallor, or increased pain occurs, loosen or rewrap immediately. If bleeding continues or the dressing becomes soaked, add another sterile pad and rewrap. Seek professional medical care for heavy bleeding, contaminated wounds, suspected fractures, or if the patient’s condition worsens.

Care and cautions: avoid excessive tightness that restricts circulation, reassess regularly, and replace the dressing if it becomes dirty or saturated.
