LEDtaustavaloja, also known as LED backlighting, refers to the use of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as a light source for illuminating displays. This technology has largely replaced older backlighting methods like cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) in various electronic devices.

The primary advantage of LED backlighting is its energy efficiency. LEDs consume significantly less power than CCFLs, leading to longer battery life in portable devices and lower electricity consumption in larger displays. Another key benefit is their improved brightness and contrast capabilities. LEDs can produce a wider range of colors and offer more precise control over illumination, resulting in sharper images and deeper blacks.

LEDs are also more durable and have a longer lifespan compared to CCFLs, making them less prone to failure and reducing maintenance needs. Furthermore, the compact size of LEDs allows for thinner and lighter display designs, contributing to the sleek aesthetics of modern electronics.

There are several types of LED backlighting configurations. Edge-lit LED uses LEDs placed along the edges of the display panel, with light diffused across the screen. Direct-lit LED, on the other hand, places LEDs directly behind the display panel in a grid pattern, allowing for more uniform brightness and better local dimming capabilities, which further enhances contrast.

LED backlighting is a fundamental technology in modern flat-panel displays, including those found in televisions, computer monitors, smartphones, tablets, and e-readers, playing a crucial role in their visual performance and energy efficiency.
