Köysimateriaalin refers to the various materials used in the construction of ropes. The choice of material significantly impacts a rope's strength, flexibility, durability, resistance to environmental factors, and cost. Historically, ropes were made from natural fibers.

Common natural fibers include manila, hemp, cotton, and sisal. Manila, derived from the abaca plant, is known for its strength and resistance to saltwater, making it ideal for marine applications. Hemp fibers offer good tensile strength and abrasion resistance. Cotton, while softer and more comfortable to handle, has lower strength and is susceptible to rot. Sisal is a strong and durable fiber, often used for agricultural and general-purpose ropes. Natural fiber ropes are biodegradable but can degrade over time due to moisture, UV exposure, and microbial activity.

Modern ropes are frequently constructed from synthetic materials, offering superior performance in many applications. Popular synthetic fibers include nylon, polyester, polypropylene, and polyethylene. Nylon is prized for its high tensile strength, elasticity, and resistance to abrasion and chemicals. Polyester offers excellent strength, low stretch, and good resistance to UV light and chemicals, making it suitable for sailing and industrial uses. Polypropylene is lightweight, buoyant, and resistant to water and most chemicals, though it has lower strength and UV resistance compared to nylon and polyester. Polyethylene, particularly high-modulus polyethylene (HMPE) like Dyneema or Spectra, offers exceptional strength-to-weight ratios, low stretch, and excellent abrasion resistance, often used in demanding applications like climbing and marine rigging. Synthetic ropes generally offer greater consistency, higher strength, and better resistance to environmental degradation than natural fiber ropes, but they are not biodegradable.
