Kõverdamist, also known as "hunching" or adopting a hunched posture, refers to the habitual slouching or rounding of the upper back and shoulders, often while sitting or standing. This posture can develop due to various factors, including prolonged sitting, poor ergonomic conditions, muscle imbalances, stress, or habitual behaviors. Over time, sustained poor posture can lead to physical discomfort, musculoskeletal issues, and even long-term structural changes in the spine.

The primary causes of kõverdamist include sedentary lifestyles, particularly those involving prolonged desk work or screen use, where individuals tend to round their shoulders and slump forward. Weakness in the back muscles, such as the erector spinae and lower trapezius, combined with overactivity in the chest and neck muscles, contributes to the development of this posture. Psychological factors, such as stress or anxiety, may also play a role, as individuals may unconsciously adopt a hunched position as a coping mechanism.

Common symptoms associated with kõverdamist include chronic neck and back pain, reduced lung capacity, headaches, and fatigue. In severe cases, it can lead to conditions like kyphosis, a forward curvature of the spine, or contribute to poor circulation and digestive issues. Over time, the rounded shoulders and forward head posture can strain the spine, leading to degenerative changes in the vertebrae.

Preventing and correcting kõverdamist involves a combination of awareness, ergonomic adjustments, and targeted exercises. Maintaining proper sitting posture—with the back straight, shoulders relaxed, and feet flat on the ground—can help mitigate the problem. Regular movement breaks, stretching, and strengthening exercises for the back, core, and shoulder muscles are also beneficial. Physical therapy or chiropractic care may be recommended for individuals with persistent or severe postural issues. Additionally, ergonomic furniture, such as adjustable chairs and standing desks, can support better posture during work or leisure activities.
