Käytettävyysriskejä, a Finnish term for usability risks, refer to potential problems that can arise when a product or system fails to meet user expectations or usability standards. These risks often manifest as user confusion, frustration or error, ultimately impacting satisfaction, productivity and safety. Because usability is integral to overall product quality, organisations increasingly incorporate risk management practices to identify, assess and mitigate these threats.

The concept of a usability risk aligns with traditional product risk frameworks. A usability risk can be defined as any aspect of a design that could produce a negative user experience, such as unintuitive navigation, hidden information, inadequate feedback, or inaccessible features. Each risk is typically evaluated in terms of probability of occurrence and potential impact. High‑probability, high‑impact risks receive immediate remediation, while lower‑priority risks may be monitored. Common examples include unclear button labels in multilingual applications, overly complex forms that block data entry, or lack of error handling in data‑entry screens.

Mitigation strategies rely on systematic usability testing, heuristic evaluations, user interviews and the application of established guidelines (e.g., ISO 9241, WCAG, Fitts’s law). Proactive risk identification happens early in the requirements phase, where designers map user workflows and search for gaps. During design, iterative prototyping combined with rapid user feedback helps to correct emerging issues. Once a risk is identified, documentation of the countermeasure, responsible party and post‑implementation review period is recorded in an organisational risk register.

Incorporating usability risk management into broader quality management processes enables teams to demonstrate compliance to clients and regulators, improves user experience outcomes, and reduces costs associated with rework or support. By treating usability as a quantifiable risk rather than an afterthought, organisations can allocate resources efficiently and ensure products deliver intended value to end users.
