Kyllinger

Kyllinger is the Danish and Norwegian term for young chickens, and by extension refers to the domestic fowl, Gallus gallus domesticus. Chickens are kept worldwide for eggs and meat, and in some contexts as ornamental birds or pets.

Biology and development: Chicks hatch after about 21 days of incubation. Newborn birds require warmth, clean water, and a protein-rich starter feed. As they mature, females become pullets and eventually hens capable of laying eggs; males become cockerels or roosters and are used for breeding or meat.

Breeds and production: Hundreds of breeds exist. Egg-laying breeds are selected for high egg output; meat breeds (broilers) for rapid growth and tender flesh. Some farms use dual-purpose breeds. Production systems range from cages to barns to free-range, with management affecting welfare and productivity.

Husbandry and welfare: Rearing requires appropriate housing, temperature control for chicks, clean water, and formulated rations. Welfare concerns include overcrowding, disease, and beak trimming in some intensive systems. Many countries regulate housing standards and encourage enrichment and biosecurity.

Impact: Chickens provide a major source of protein worldwide, with eggs and poultry meat forming a large share of animal agriculture. Flocks vary from small family plots to large commercial operations, and trends focus on welfare, sustainability, and efficient production.
