Kylkiasento

Kylkiasento, or lateral decubitus position, is a body posture in which a person lies on one side with the spine kept in a neutral alignment. The side that faces downward is called the left kylkiasento (vasen kylkiasento) or the right kylkiasento (oikea kylkiasento). The position is commonly achieved with pillows or supports placed under the head, between the knees, and behind the back to maintain comfort and alignment.

The fit for various contexts, kylkiasento is used in clinical care, diagnostic imaging, and certain procedures. It facilitates drainage of secretions and improves ventilation in unilateral lung conditions, exposes access to specific surgical areas, and serves as an aid during imaging studies to delineate fluid levels or organ borders. In obstetrics, the left lateral decubitus position is often used to relieve compression of major blood vessels and to improve uteroplacental perfusion. In sleep and rehabilitation settings, side-lying can be recommended for comfort or airway management, but practice varies with patient condition.

Implementation and safety emphasize proper support and alignment. A pillow or foam slab may support the head and neck, a pillow between the knees, and a pillow behind the back to prevent rolling. It is important to avoid excessive neck flexion, limb overextension, or prolonged pressure on bony prominences. Monitoring for discomfort and nerve compression—especially in the shoulder and arm—and repositioning regularly help reduce risks. Caution is advised in cases of suspected spinal injury, unstable conditions, or certain pregnancy-related risks; always follow professional guidelines for individual situations.
