Kuwaiti

Kuwaiti is a demonym for a person from the State of Kuwait, or for something related to Kuwait. In English, it is used for citizens of Kuwait and, less commonly, for residents who hold Kuwaiti nationality. The term also serves as the corresponding adjective describing things connected with Kuwait, including its culture, institutions, and geography.

Kuwait's citizenry is complemented by a large expatriate workforce, with non-citizens making up the majority of residents in the country. Kuwaiti identity is traditionally linked to the Arabic language and to cultural practices shaped by Bedouin and Gulf urban life. The official language is Arabic, with Kuwaiti Arabic as the local dialect; English is widely used in business and education. The economy is heavily based on oil and gas, and many Kuwaitis participate in government, public services, and financial sectors.

Nationality in Kuwait is defined by the Kuwaiti Nationality Law. Naturalization has historically been limited, and in practice Kuwaitis are citizens by birth or to a smaller extent by naturalization. Dual citizenship is generally not permitted, with limited exceptions. Kuwaiti nationality carries political rights, including participation in the National Assembly, though access to citizenship is tightly controlled.

Social and cultural life reflects a mix of traditional Gulf customs and modern urban norms. Kuwaitis participate in arts, sports, and cuisine typical of the region, while leveraging a high standard of education and welfare programs available to citizens. The country is a constitutional monarchy known as the State of Kuwait, with an emir as head of state and a parliamentary system.
