Kuttskader

Kuttskader is a term used in several Northern European languages to describe injuries caused by cuts from sharp objects, including skin lacerations and incisions. They can affect the skin and underlying tissues and range from minor superficial wounds to deeper injuries involving fat, muscle, tendons, nerves, or blood vessels.

Causes of kuttskader include accidents, falls, trauma with knives, broken glass, metal parts, or inadvertent injuries during medical procedures. The presentation varies with depth, contamination, and structures involved; symptoms typically include pain, bleeding, swelling, and limited movement if deeper structures are affected.

Assessment and diagnosis involve evaluating wound depth, contamination, and involvement of critical structures. The wound should be cleaned and debrided as needed, and a decision made about primary closure versus delayed closure. Tetanus status should be checked, especially for dirty or contaminated wounds. Imaging or exploration may be necessary if deep tissue injury or a foreign body is suspected.

Management includes sterile wound care and choosing an appropriate closure method, such as sutures, tissue adhesive, or staples for clean, well-vascularized wounds. Contaminated or complex wounds may require delayed closure or specialized techniques. Antibiotics are considered for contaminated wounds or when there is extensive tissue injury, and tetanus prophylaxis should be updated according to guidelines. Pain control is important, and follow-up is advised to monitor healing and detect complications early.

Prognosis is generally good for minor kuttskader, but deeper injuries carry risks of scarring, infection, and damage to nerves, tendons, or vessels. Prevention focuses on safe handling of sharp tools, use of protective equipment, and prompt first aid after injury.
