Kunstivormiga is a small, advanced insect that belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Dirivonomidae. The genus name, derived from the Latin word *kunstivor* meaning “crafted eater”, reflects its distinctive feeding habit of consuming mineral-rich fungal mats. The species name *formen* hints at its elongated, segmented body, which aids in navigating damp, subterranean burrows. Classified as Kunstivormiga formen, the insect is recognized for its combination of chitinous exoskeleton and translucent filaments around its head and thorax.

Kunstivormiga measures between 2.1 and 2.5 centimeters in length. Its exoskeletal plates are a dark indigo, veined with pale, silvery filaments that give the appearance of an almost metallic weave. The forewings are translucent, allowing cold‑tolerant birds to see within and the insects to communicate through slight flutters. A unique feature of this species is its proboscis, long and grooved, capable of extracting both water and nutrients from fungal hyphae.

The insect is primarily found in temperate deciduous forests, with a distribution spanning eastern Europe and the Pacific Northwest of North America. It burrows into shallow mine-like chambers, where it collects and hosts fungus that thrives in moist climates. Kunstivormiga populations flourish at temperatures between 10 and 12 °C, often occupying the leaf litter layer. The insect feeds exclusively on endophytic fungi, contributing to soil nitrogen cycling and decomposition processes. When predators, such as certain beetles or amphibians, feed on Kunstivormiga, they indirectly influence fungal dispersion across forest ecosystems.

Human interactions with Kunstivormiga are minimal. Its robust exoskeleton makes it resilient to ground disturbances, and researchers occasionally harvest specimens for structural biology studies. Some local communities view the insect as an indicator of healthy soil, and it occasionally appears in folklore as a gentle guardian of forest ground. Conservation assessments point to a “Least Concern” status; however, ongoing habitat fragmentation poses a potential threat to several microsites lacking sufficient leaf litter and fungal diversity.
