Kuldlõikaja

Kuldlõikaja is the Estonian name for the Eurasian golden oriole (Oriolus oriolus), a migratory bird found across Europe and western Asia. It is the only member of the oriole family found in Europe. The male Kuldlõikaja is known for its striking plumage, featuring a bright yellow body, black wings, and a black tail. Females and juvenile birds are a duller greenish-yellow with streaked underparts, providing better camouflage.

Kuldlõikaja typically inhabits deciduous or mixed woodlands, often near water sources. They are elusive birds, preferring to stay high in the canopy, which makes them difficult to observe. Their diet consists mainly of insects and fruits, with a particular fondness for ripe cherries and berries.

The bird's song is a series of flute-like whistles, often described as rich and melodious, though it can vary. During the breeding season, males use their song to attract females and defend their territory. Kuldlõikaja builds cup-shaped nests, usually suspended from branches in tall trees.

As a migratory species, Kuldlõikaja spends its winters in sub-Saharan Africa. They undertake long journeys, returning to their European breeding grounds in late spring. Their arrival is often seen as a sign of summer. The conservation status of Kuldlõikaja is generally considered to be of least concern, though local populations can be affected by habitat loss and changes in agricultural practices.
