Konservaattorit are professionals who work to preserve cultural heritage objects and works of art. Their work combines scientific investigation, art history, and manual craft. They assess the condition of artifacts, plan conservation treatments, and execute them using methods intended to stabilize and restore while preserving original material. They also engage in preventive conservation, monitoring environmental conditions, handling, storage, and display practices to slow deterioration.

Conservation work covers a wide range of materials, including paintings, textiles, paper, metals, wood, archaeological finds, and archival records. Depending on specialization, a conservator may conduct surface cleaning, consolidation, inpainting, structural repair, or the stabilization of fragile materials. Much of the work is carried out in laboratories, restoration studios, or storage facilities, but may also involve on-site assessment in museums or historic sites. Documentation is a core activity: condition reports, treatment proposals, and records of materials and methods used are kept to ensure reversibility and accountability.

Education for conservators typically includes a university degree in conservation, restoration, or related fields, with advanced training in chemistry, materials science, art history, and preventive conservation. Practical experience through internships or residencies is common. Professional practice is guided by ethics emphasizing non-invasive, reversible interventions when possible, compatibility of materials, and thorough documentation. Conservators often collaborate with curators, scientists, archivists, and builders, and may be employed by national or local museums, archives, libraries, and heritage agencies, or work privately. Professional associations in many countries provide standards and continuing education.
