Kondrosarkooma

Kondrosarkooma is a type of bone cancer that originates in the cartilage cells. Cartilage is the connective tissue that provides cushioning and support to joints, such as in the knees, hips, and shoulders. Kondrosarkooma is a relatively rare cancer, accounting for a small percentage of all bone tumors.

This cancer most commonly affects adults, typically between the ages of 40 and 70. It can occur in any bone containing cartilage, but the pelvis, femur (thigh bone), and humerus (upper arm bone) are frequent sites. Symptoms can vary but often include persistent pain in the affected area, swelling, and sometimes a palpable mass. The pain may worsen at night or with activity.

The exact cause of kondrosarkooma is not fully understood. While most cases appear to arise spontaneously, some risk factors may include prior radiation therapy or certain genetic conditions. Diagnosis usually involves imaging techniques such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRI scans, followed by a biopsy to confirm the presence and type of cancer cells.

Treatment for kondrosarkooma depends on the stage and grade of the tumor, as well as its location. Surgery is the primary treatment, aiming to remove the tumor completely. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are generally less effective against kondrosarkooma compared to other types of bone cancer, but may be used in specific situations or for more aggressive forms. The prognosis varies widely depending on these factors.
