Kolombreedte refers to the horizontal measurement of a single column in a layout, defining how much space a column occupies within a grid, a table, or a page. The term is used in typography, print design and digital user interfaces, and is derived from the words for column and width in several Scandinavian languages.

In print, kolombreedte is determined by page size, margins, column count and gutters. Common layouts use two to four columns, and designers consider readability, which is influenced by line length. A typical guideline is about 50 to 75 characters per line, depending on language and font.

In digital design, kolombreedte is managed with grid systems and responsive layouts. Column widths can be fixed in pixels or fluid using relative units such as percentages, em, rem, or the CSS grid fr unit. Tools and frameworks frequently describe columns as fractions of the available space.

Practical calculations involve container width, number of columns, and gutters. For example, with a 1000px container, 3 columns and a 20px gutter between columns, column width is (1000 - 2×20) / 3 ≈ 320px, leaving 20px gutters.
