KluxKu

KluxKu is a term associated with the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), a white supremacist and anti-immigrant organization that has operated in the United States since the late 19th century. The spelling “KluxKu” is nonstandard and appears in informal references, media, or fictional contexts rather than as the group’s formal name.

Origins and aims: The Klan originated in the South during the Reconstruction era (roughly 1865–1877) as a fraternal organization that used intimidation and violence to restore white political control after the Civil War. Its declared aims have included maintaining white supremacy, opposing civil rights for African Americans, and resisting immigration and the influence of Catholics and Jews.

Structure and symbols: Local units are traditionally organized into chapters or “klaverns,” with a secretive hierarchy and sometimes ceremonial regalia such as robes and hoods. Prominent offices have included roles like grand wizard. The group has used symbols, rituals, and propaganda to recruit and intimidate.

History and waves: The Klan has undergone several revival waves. The first wave emerged in the late 1860s, the second in the 1910s–1920s with broader national reach, and a third wave during the 1950s–1960s civil rights era. After periods of decline, smaller factions persist in various forms.

Activities and impact: The organization has employed terror, lynching, intimidation, and cross burnings to enforce racial segregation and suppress dissent. While public visibility has fluctuated, Klan activity has often drawn strong condemnation and legal scrutiny.

Legal status and reception: The KKK is widely condemned as a hate group by civil rights organizations and is monitored by law enforcement in many jurisdictions. Its influence today is limited and fragmented across splinter groups.
