Kloonaukseen

Kloonaukseen is a Finnish term used to describe the field and practice of creating genetically identical copies of biological material, ranging from cells to entire organisms, and the related techniques used in research, agriculture, and medicine. The concept encompasses both organismal cloning, where a whole individual is produced with the same genetic makeup as the donor, and cellular or molecular cloning, where specific DNA sequences or cell lines are duplicated.

The main methodological distinction is between reproductive cloning, which aims to produce a new organism, and therapeutic or research cloning, which focuses on cells or tissues for study or treatment without creating a living clone. Reproductive cloning often relies on somatic cell nuclear transfer, a process in which the nucleus of a somatic cell is transferred into an enucleated egg. Therapeutic cloning seeks to derive embryonic stem cells or induced pluripotent stem cells that are genetically matched to a donor for research or potential medical applications.

Historically, cloning advancements began with animal experiments in the late 20th century and culminated in the birth of Dolly the sheep in 1996, a landmark event that spurred widespread debate. Since then, cloning has progressed in various species, though efficiency remains limited and ethical concerns have shaped policy developments. The rise of induced pluripotent stem cell technology has provided alternatives to embryonic sources, influencing discussions around therapeutic cloning.
