KlimaTipping is a concept used to describe climate system transitions that occur when gradual changes in external forcing push the system past a critical threshold, causing abrupt and potentially irreversible changes in climate state. The idea emphasizes that small additional forcings can lead to disproportionately large responses due to reinforcing feedbacks, structural changes in oceanic and atmospheric circulation, and shifts in biosphere dynamics.

The core mechanisms involve feedback loops that amplify initial changes. Examples include reductions in ice and snow cover that lower surface albedo and accelerate warming, thawing permafrost releasing methane and carbon, changes in ocean circulation that alter heat distribution, and forest dieback that weakens regional carbon uptake. These processes can move the climate toward a new equilibrium with different temperature, precipitation, and ecosystem patterns, sometimes with hysteresis that makes reversal difficult.
