Klaasitöötlemine refers to the processes involved in shaping and finishing glass to meet specific functional or aesthetic requirements. This broad category encompasses a variety of techniques, each imparting different properties to the material. Cutting and grinding are fundamental steps, used to achieve precise shapes and smooth edges from raw glass sheets.

Tempering, also known as heat strengthening, is a crucial process for increasing the mechanical strength and safety of glass. This is achieved by heating the glass to a high temperature and then rapidly cooling its surface, creating compressive stress on the outer layers and tensile stress in the core. When broken, tempered glass shatters into small, blunt fragments, reducing the risk of injury.

Another significant method is lamination, where two or more layers of glass are bonded together with an interlayer, typically polyvinyl butyral (PVB). This creates safety glass that, upon impact, holds together even if the glass breaks, preventing dangerous shards from scattering. Annealing is a heat treatment process used to relieve internal stresses in glass, making it less prone to breakage.

Surface treatments are also common, including coating glass with thin films to provide properties like reflectivity, UV filtering, or self-cleaning capabilities. Etching and sandblasting are techniques used to create decorative patterns or frosted surfaces. These various methods allow glass to be transformed from a fragile material into a versatile component used across numerous industries, from construction and automotive to electronics and art.
