The core of a library management system is its catalog, which contains bibliographic records of all the items in the library's holdings. Patrons can search this catalog to locate books, journals, and other materials. The circulation module handles the lending and return of items, tracking which items are out, who has them, and when they are due back. Acquisitions modules assist in the purchasing and ordering of new materials, while serials control helps manage subscriptions to periodicals.

Modern library management systems often include features beyond traditional functions. These can encompass digital resource management, interlibrary loan capabilities, and online public access catalogs (OPACs) that are accessible from outside the library. Many systems are also web-based, allowing for remote access and integration with other digital services. The implementation and maintenance of these systems require technical expertise and ongoing support to ensure smooth operation and adaptation to evolving library needs and technological advancements.
