Kipplagen

Kipplagen is a descriptive term used in some Dutch- and German-speaking poultry contexts to denote a cluster of health problems observed in domestic chickens. It is not a formal diagnostic category in veterinary medicine, but rather a label applied by farmers or veterinarians to describe signs affecting flock productivity and welfare.

Typical signs include reduced appetite and weight loss, lethargy, ruffled plumage, pale combs, decreased egg production, coughing or sneezing, nasal discharge, and occasional diarrhea. In severe cases, birds may die without clear cause. Because Kipplagen is a non-specific label, the underlying causes may be infectious (bacterial or viral respiratory infections, Newcastle disease, avian influenza), parasitic (ectoparasites or intestinal worms), nutritional deficiencies, toxins, or environmental stress such as poor ventilation and high ammonia levels.

Diagnosis requires veterinary assessment, including history, clinical exam, and laboratory tests (for pathogens, blood work, necropsy if needed). Differential diagnoses include respiratory diseases, metabolic disorders, and poisoning. Treatment targets the underlying cause and may involve supportive care, improved housing and nutrition, antiparasitics or antibiotics when appropriate, vaccination where applicable, and adherence to antibiotic stewardship.

Prevention focuses on biosecurity, quarantine of new stock, sanitation, proper ventilation, comfortable stocking density, parasite control, and vaccination programs for common poultry diseases. Terminology: Kipplagen literally translates to "chicken plague" in Dutch; its use varies by region and it should not be confused with officially recognized diseases.
