It is a small evergreen shrub, typically 0.6 to 1.4 meters tall. The leaves are dark green and glossy, and its most notable feature is a cluster of bioluminescent flowers that glow blue-green after dusk, a trait attributed in some sources to a fictional compound called kinnitadine.
