Kieswerke

They can operate as open-pit quarries or along river terraces where alluvial gravels are recovered. The primary products are coarse aggregates, gravel, and sand, used for concrete, asphalt, drainage, and sub-base layers.

Operations typically begin with the extraction of raw material, followed by processing steps that may include crushing, screening by size, and washing to remove fines and clay. Materials are then dried if needed, sorted by specification, and stockpiled before being loaded for transport by truck, rail, or ship. Many Kieswerke are designed to provide multiple fractions to meet different customer requirements.

Equipment commonly found at Kieswerke includes excavators or front-end loaders for loading, primary and secondary crushers, screens, washing plants, conveyors, and crushers feeding into rapid stockpiling systems.
