Khártyagyulladás

Khártyagyulladás is the Hungarian term for inflammation of the conjunctiva, commonly known as conjunctivitis or "pink eye." It is a condition affecting the thin, transparent membrane that lines the eyelid and covers the white part of the eyeball. This inflammation can be caused by several factors, including viruses, bacteria, allergies, and irritants.

Viral conjunctivitis is the most common form and often accompanies cold or flu symptoms. It typically presents with watery discharge and a gritty sensation in the eye. Bacterial conjunctivitis, on the other hand, is characterized by thicker, pus-like discharge and may cause eyelids to stick together, especially upon waking. Allergic conjunctivitis is triggered by allergens such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander and usually involves itching, redness, and watery eyes, often affecting both eyes simultaneously. Irritant conjunctivitis arises from exposure to smoke, chemicals, or foreign objects in the eye.

Symptoms of khártyagyulladás can include redness of the eyes, itching or burning sensations, a gritty feeling, excessive tearing, and discharge that may be watery, white, yellow, or green. While generally not a serious condition, persistent or severe symptoms, changes in vision, or significant pain warrant medical attention. Diagnosis is usually based on the patient's symptoms and a physical examination. Treatment varies depending on the cause, with viral infections often resolving on their own, bacterial infections requiring antibiotic drops or ointments, and allergic conjunctivitis managed with antihistamines or steroid eye drops. Good hygiene, such as frequent handwashing, is crucial in preventing the spread of contagious forms of conjunctivitis.
