Kettingslings

Kettingslings are modular lifting assemblies designed to form adjustable, robust attachments between loads and lifting equipment. They consist of chain segments linked by forged connectors and master links, allowing the effective length to be varied without changing components. The term combines the words for chain (ketting) and sling, reflecting their common use in rigging and material handling.

Construction and configuration commonly involve alloy steel chain of designated grade, with components such as chain links, master links, hooks, and end fittings like clevis or lug hooks. Variants include single-leg and multi-leg configurations, enabling different load distributions. Adjustable-length versions use linked sections or connecting links to achieve the desired reach, while some designs incorporate cross-chains or additional legs to improve stability and reduce load swing during lifting.

Applications span heavy construction, manufacturing, mining, shipping, and steel, where variable reach and secure load attachment are required. Kettingslings are used to lift pipes, structural members, machinery, and other heavy items, particularly when precise balance and multiple lift points are beneficial.

Safety and standards are central to their use. Operators must observe the working load limit (WLL) for the specific chain grade and configuration, avoid exceeding rated capacities, and perform pre-use inspections for wear, deformation, elongation, corrosion, and heat damage. After any shock loading or suspected damage, components should be retired or re-certified. Kettingslings should be integrated into a formal rigging plan and comply with applicable standards and testing regimes for chain slings and lifting devices, such as European and North American guidelines.

Maintenance and care include regular cleaning, lubrication of moving parts, protection from corrosion, proper storage, and avoidance of welding or heat treatments that could reduce strength.
