Keramikatüübi

Keramikatüübi refers to a classification or type of ceramic material. Ceramics are broadly defined as inorganic, non-metallic solids comprising metal, non-metal or metalloid atoms primarily held in ionic and covalent bonds. The "tüübi" component, originating from Estonian, translates to "type" or "kind," indicating a specific categorization within the larger ceramic family.

Ceramic types are distinguished by their composition, manufacturing process, and resulting properties. Common categories include earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain, each with different firing temperatures and porosity levels. Earthenware is fired at lower temperatures and remains porous, often used for decorative items and historically for pottery. Stoneware is fired at higher temperatures, making it denser and less porous, suitable for dinnerware and tiles. Porcelain, fired at the highest temperatures, is exceptionally dense, vitrified, and often translucent, utilized in fine china, electrical insulators, and advanced technical applications.

Beyond these traditional classifications, modern ceramics encompass a vast range of technical and advanced materials. These include refractories, designed to withstand high temperatures; abrasives, used for grinding and polishing; and structural ceramics, engineered for high strength and wear resistance, finding applications in aerospace, automotive, and medical fields.
