Kalvopäällysteinen

Kalvopäällysteinen is a Finnish term used as an adjective to describe a material, surface, or product that has a thin film (kalvo) coating on its exterior. The word combines kalvo (film) and päällysteinen (coated), and it is commonly found in technical and industrial contexts. A kalvopäällysteinen coating may consist of polymers, metals, or ceramic materials and is applied to substrates by coating, laminating, extrusion, or deposition processes. The resulting film is typically micrometers thick, but thickness varies with application.

The coating serves several purposes: to improve barrier properties against moisture, oxygen, or oils; to increase chemical resistance; to reduce permeability to gases; and to impart specific surface properties such as hydrophobicity, gloss, or slip. It can also enhance mechanical durability or thermal stability. The adhesion of the film to the substrate is a key property and often determines performance.

Common applications include kalvopäällysteinen paperi or kartonki used in packaging to extend shelf life, film-coated textiles, protective or decorative surfaces in electronics, automotive parts, and construction materials, as well as medical devices and packaging. In Finnish technical vocabulary, kalvopäällysteinen is used in product specifications, datasheets, and research literature to denote that a surface carries a film coating rather than being uncoated.
