Kalkkikertymä

Kalkkikertymä, often referred to as limescale or calcium buildup, is a common problem in many households and industrial settings. It is primarily composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), which precipitates out of hard water. Hard water contains a high concentration of dissolved minerals, especially calcium and magnesium ions. When water is heated or evaporates, these minerals become less soluble and can deposit on surfaces.

The formation of kalkkikertymä is a gradual process. As water flows over or sits in contact with surfaces, particularly in pipes, heating elements, faucets, showerheads, and appliances like kettles and washing machines, the dissolved calcium and magnesium ions begin to crystallize. Over time, these microscopic crystals accumulate, forming a hard, chalky deposit. The white or off-white appearance is characteristic of this buildup.

Beyond being unsightly, kalkkikertymä can have practical consequences. In plumbing systems, it can narrow pipes, reducing water flow and pressure, and increasing the risk of blockages. In appliances, it can reduce efficiency, as a layer of limescale on a heating element, for example, acts as an insulator, requiring more energy to heat the water. This can lead to increased energy consumption and a shorter lifespan for the appliance. Regular cleaning and maintenance, as well as water softening solutions, are common methods to prevent or remove kalkkikertymä.
