Kaitsefunktsioonidele, often translated as "defensive functions," refers to the psychological processes and behaviors an individual employs to protect themselves from perceived threats, whether internal or external. These functions are crucial for maintaining psychological equilibrium and can manifest in various ways. They are not inherently negative; rather, they are adaptive mechanisms that help individuals cope with stress, anxiety, and difficult emotions.

Common examples of defense mechanisms include repression, where unwanted thoughts or feelings are pushed out of conscious awareness; denial, the refusal to acknowledge a distressing reality; projection, attributing one's own unacceptable impulses or feelings to others; and rationalization, creating logical but false explanations for unacceptable behavior. Other examples include displacement, redirecting emotions to a safer target, and sublimation, channeling unacceptable impulses into socially acceptable activities.

While defense mechanisms can be helpful in the short term, excessive or rigid reliance on them can hinder personal growth and lead to maladaptive behaviors. In psychoanalytic theory, understanding an individual's dominant defense mechanisms can offer insights into their personality, underlying conflicts, and potential areas for therapeutic intervention. The effectiveness of these functions can vary greatly depending on the individual, the context, and the nature of the threat. They operate largely unconsciously, meaning individuals are often unaware of their use.
