Some writers treat it as a construct derived from a fictional language, with proposed meanings that range from light or knowledge to assembly and gathering. Because it occupies a fictional or theoretical space, there is no single authoritative definition.

Characteristics commonly attributed to joonlaud include modular and reconfigurable urban form, open data platforms, shared fabrication and workshop spaces, and plazas designed for user-generated programming and small-scale civic projects.
