Jesses
Jesses are slender straps fitted to the legs of raptors used in falconry to restrain and control the bird when it is not in flight. They form part of the standard equipment for handling, training, and housing. In typical setups, one jess is worn on each leg and is secured to a leather anklet around the bird’s tarsus. The free end of the jess bears a ring, stud, or clip to which a leash or creance can be attached, allowing the handler to guide or restrain the bird as needed.
Materials and construction: Traditional jesses are crafted from leather—often cowhide, goatskin, or kangaroo hide—but synthetic options
Fit and maintenance: A proper fit is snug but not constrictive, enabling adequate blood flow and wing
Regulatory context: Falconry is typically regulated, and jesses are part of standard compliance. Laws and club
