A jardinier performs soil preparation, planting, pruning and trimming, weeding, mulching, irrigation, fertilization, pest and disease management, and seasonal cleanup. In some contexts, the term also covers professional landscape maintenance, though more specialized design work is carried out by landscape designers or horticulturists.

Etymology and context: the word comes from French, from jardin, meaning garden, with the agent suffix -ier. Historically, jardiniers served estates, monasteries, and public grounds, and the role persists in private households, municipalities, and commercial nurseries. In modern usage, distinctions are often made among related occupations: a gardener or jardinier maintains and cares for plants; a horticulturist studies plant science and may work with crops or ornamentals; a landscaper focuses on the design and installation of outdoor spaces.

Duties and scope: typical tasks include soil improvement, planting schemes, pruning and shaping, lawn care, irrigation systems, pest control, and seasonal maintenance. Tools commonly used are trowels, pruners, shears, rakes, and hoses. Work may be seasonal and can range from routine upkeep to specialized programs for public parks, institutions, or private estates. Cultural note: in cuisine, “à la jardinière” describes vegetables prepared in a garden-style manner, often cut into small pieces or matchsticks, and often served with butter or herb sauce.
